What is “AShjar” Initiative?
It is an initiative launched by Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs to preserve wild trees through plantation of different Oman’s trees and plants in view of their economic and cultural value,  as they are a source of food,  medicine and fuel, keep the ecosystems balanced, and support many organisms’ life.  The initiative has been named “Ashjar’ as this word is easy to pronounce and write in both Arabic and English,  and give a simple and inclusive meaning i.e. refers to all kinds of trees and plants.

Initiative Goals
•Raise awareness, educate, and activate the participation of society in the preservation of wild trees and plants.
•Preserve native wild plants and trees, and increase landscapes.
•Expand partnerships and cooperation between government institutions and private sector in the plantation of trees and plants.

  Conditions for Participation  in the Initiate                                                              
   •The plantation should not be for-profit.                                                            
   •The applicant shall collect the seedling from the Ministry’s nurseries:
   A)Plant Nursery in Al Saleel Natural Park (Al-Kamel WA Al-Wafi , Ash Sharqiyah   South Governorate.
   B)Plant Nursery in the Wildlife Rehabilitation and Breeding Center ( Barka, Al   Batinah South)
   C)Plant Propagation Center ( Qairoon Hairiti, Salalah, Governorate of Dhofar)                       
  •Seedlings will be provided as available.
  •The Ministry will select the species appropriate and available for plantation as   described in the manual
  •The land for plantation shall be privately owned by the applicant.
    
  Recommendations:
  1.Seedlings to be planted in areas and conditions suitable for each species.
  2.Applicant should take good care of the seedling and irrigate it at least three   times a week.
                                                                                                            3.Depending on the tree size, there must be a space of at least three                                                                                                               to seven meters between each seedling.
